Galmudug Journalists Association (GALJA) Conducts Freedom of Speech Training for Journalists and Police in Dhuusamareeb.
Dhuusamareeb, 10 June 2024 – The Galmudug Journalists Association (GALJA), in collaboration with the UN Support Office of UNSOM, particularly the Office of Human Rights, and UNICEF, launched a two-day training session today. The event, attended by 25 journalists and several members of the Galmudug Police, aims to promote freedom of expression and foster collaboration between media professionals and security forces.
The training session was graced by the presence of Mohamud Osman Abdulle, Secretary of the Galmudug Journalists Association, alongside ministers, members of the Galmudug Parliament, journalists, and the police.
In his opening remarks, Secretary Abdulle warmly welcomed the participants, highlighting the critical importance of protecting freedom of the press. He emphasized that moving forward, there will be seamless communication and cooperation between journalists and the police, underscoring the need to safeguard press freedom.
The event was officially inaugurated by Galmudug Deputy Minister of Information, Hussein Hersi Farah. In his speech, Minister Farah stressed the necessity for both the media and the police to have a mutual understanding of the principles of freedom of speech. He called for enhanced efforts to develop and uphold this freedom, which is vital for a transparent and informed society. Minister Farah also expressed his gratitude to GALJA, the UNSOM Office, and UNICEF for their instrumental roles in organizing this crucial training session.
The training covered various topics including the legal frameworks governing freedom of expression, the role of media in a democratic society, and strategies for effective communication between journalists and security forces. Interactive workshops and panel discussions were held to facilitate practical learning and exchange of experiences.
Participants engaged in group activities that simulated real-life scenarios, helping to build trust and understanding between journalists and police officers. This hands-on approach was designed to foster a cooperative environment where both parties can learn to respect each other’s roles and responsibilities.
